The best part is that there’s no baking involved! All you need is a store-bought cake, some fun sprinkles, and a little creativity.

Trader Joe’s Sheet Cake Hack for Fall Decorating
I recently had so much fun decorating these little cakes that I shared them on Instagram. I thought they were too cute not to share here on the blog, too!
We picked up three Trader Joe’s mini sheet cakes, two yellow cakes and one chocolate cake. We also used their gluten-free sheet cake, which is another nice option for this project.
Here’s something fun about how we came up with our designs! We actually used AI to help us plan our cakes.
We took photos of all the sprinkles, candies, and cakes we had purchased and uploaded them to AI. Then we asked it to come up with fall and Halloween cake designs using our supplies.
It gave us some really cute ideas! We used those designs as inspiration and had fun creating our own versions.
And since the cakes were already baked and frosted, we could jump right into decorating!
Supplies for Decorating Trader Joe’s Sheet Cakes
You don’t need any fancy cake-decorating tools for this project. Most of the fun comes from arranging the colorful sprinkles into different shapes and designs.
What I love about this Trader Joe’s sheet cake hack is that you don’t need any fancy decorating tools. Just grab your favorite sprinkles and candies, and you’re ready to start!

Here’s what we used:
- Trader Joe’s mini sheet cakes (yellow, chocolate, and gluten-free varieties)
- Colorful fall and Halloween sprinkles
- Pink, orange, and metallic candy pearls
- Chocolate sprinkles
- Mini candy pumpkins
- Candy corn
- Candy stars and other Fall decorations
- Toothpicks
- Small offset spatula or butter knife
- Small bowls for organizing the sprinkles
You can use whatever sprinkles you have on hand. I love mixing different sizes and colors to give the designs a little more personality.
Three Easy Fall Sheet Cake Decorating Ideas
We picked up three Trader Joe’s mini sheet cakes, two yellow cakes and one chocolate cake. One of the cakes was gluten-free, and we were curious to see how it tasted. Well, I’m happy to report that it was amazing! We were pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was, and I’d definitely buy it again.
1. Fall Tree Cake with Colorful Sprinkles

This autumn tree was such a fun design to make! I love all the pretty fall colors against the white frosting.
We used chocolate sprinkles to create the tree trunk and branches, then added colorful candies and sprinkles to make the autumn leaves.
I took photos while decorating this cake so you can see how it came together.
How to Make the Fall Tree Cake
Step 1: Smooth the Frosting
Before decorating, I used a spatula to spread the frosting evenly across the top of the cake.
I wasn’t crazy about the way the frosting looked straight out of the package, so smoothing it out gave me a nice blank canvas for decorating.
Step 2: Create the Tree Trunk

Start by arranging chocolate sprinkles into the shape of a tree trunk. Make the trunk a little wider at the bottom and narrower toward the top.
Step 3: Add the Branches

Continue arranging the chocolate sprinkles to create branches extending from the trunk.
Don’t worry about making the branches perfectly straight. A little variation makes the tree look more natural.
Step 4: Add the Colorful Fall Leaves

Now comes the fun part!
Add colorful fall sprinkles and candies around the branches to create autumn leaves. We used a mixture of warm fall colors to give the tree a pretty seasonal look.
Step 5: Add the Finishing Touches

Finish by scattering a few more sprinkles around the tree. I love how the little candies look like leaves falling to the ground!
This cake turned out so cute, and I especially love how the colorful sprinkles stand out against the white frosting.
2. Halloween Jack-o’-Lantern Cake

For our chocolate sheet cake, we decided to create a big, smiling jack-o’-lantern.
The dark chocolate frosting made the bright orange candies stand out beautifully!
We used orange candy pearls to create the pumpkin face, then added candy corn, little ghosts, stars, and other Halloween sprinkles around the design.
I love how playful this cake turned out! The little decorations surrounding the pumpkin make it look like a fun Halloween scene.
And here’s a helpful trick my husband used. He lightly outlined his design with a toothpick before placing the candies on the frosting.
That made it much easier to follow the shape and keep everything where he wanted it.
3. Pink Pickup Truck with Pumpkins

This might be my favorite design! We made an adorable pink pickup truck carrying pumpkins in the back.
I love decorating with pink for fall, and the combination of pink and orange is so cheerful.
We used pink candy pearls to create the truck, then added little pumpkin candies in the truck bed. The colorful Halloween sprinkles around the design gave it a festive finishing touch.
This is such a cute alternative to traditional Halloween cake decorations.
And you could easily change the truck color to red, orange, or even light blue, depending on the sprinkles you have!

After decorating our cakes, we picked up a few helpful tricks that made the process easier. Here are my favorite tips!

Smooth the Frosting Before Decorating
One of the first things I did was smooth out the frosting.
The original frosting had some texture and uneven areas, and I wanted a flatter surface for our sprinkle designs.
I used a small spatula to gently spread the frosting across the top of the cake. This created a smooth canvas and made it much easier to arrange the decorations.
Outline Your Design with a Toothpick

My husband came up with this clever idea!
Before adding his sprinkles, he used a toothpick to lightly sketch his design directly into the frosting.
This created a guide for placing the candies and helped keep the shapes looking neat.
If you make a mistake, simply smooth the frosting over that area and start again.
Plan Your Design Before Starting
I think this is probably the most important tip!
Before you start adding sprinkles, decide what you want your cake to look like.
Think about which colors you’ll use, where the main design will go, and how much room you’ll need for the decorations.
Having a plan makes the whole process much easier.
Use AI for Cake Decorating Inspiration
One of the fun things we did before decorating our cakes was use AI to help us brainstorm some ideas!
We uploaded photos of our sprinkles, candies, and Trader Joe’s sheet cakes and asked AI to create fall and Halloween designs using what we already had.
Some of the ideas were adorable, while others were a little too complicated to recreate with tiny sprinkles! But it was so much fun seeing all the different possibilities.
Here are a few of the AI-generated designs that inspired us!

As you can see, our finished cakes turned out a little different from the AI designs. We made a few changes, simplified some of the details, and added our own creative touches along the way.
If you’re not sure how to decorate your cake, I recommend trying this! Just take photos of your supplies and ask AI for a few decorating ideas. You might be surprised by what it comes up with!
Organize Your Sprinkles

Before decorating, pour your sprinkles and candies into small bowls.
If you’re using several colors, it helps to separate them so you can easily find what you need.
This is especially helpful when you’re creating shapes with tiny candy pearls.
Start with the Main Design
I recommend creating the largest part of your design first.
For example, make the tree trunk before adding the leaves, outline the pumpkin before filling in the face, and create the truck before adding the pumpkins.
Once the main design is finished, fill in the empty spaces with smaller decorations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Decorate Trader Joe’s Sheet Cakes Ahead of Time?
Yes! You can decorate the cakes ahead of time, but I recommend adding the sprinkles and candies as close to serving as possible.
Some decorations can soften or bleed their colors into the frosting if they sit too long.
Can You Use a Gluten-Free Sheet Cake?
Absolutely! We used Trader Joe’s gluten-free sheet cake for this project, too.
It’s a fun way to create a decorated dessert without baking from scratch. If you’re making it for someone who needs to avoid gluten, be sure to check the labels on your sprinkles and candies as well.
Do You Need Extra Frosting?
No! That’s one of the reasons I love this cake-decorating hack.
The Trader Joe’s mini sheet cakes already have frosting, so you can simply smooth the top and start decorating.
Can You Use Other Store-Bought Cakes?
Of course!
These decorating ideas will work on other frosted sheet cakes, too. I recommend choosing a cake with a relatively flat frosting surface so it’s easier to create your designs.
More Fun Fall and Halloween Treats
If you enjoy making cute seasonal desserts, here are a few more treats you might love!
And of course, Maisy wanted to be part of our little cake-decorating afternoon! She was very interested in everything happening on the table, so I made sure she had a few of her own dog treats. I couldn’t resist snapping this cute photo of her!

This Trader Joe’s sheet cake hack was such a fun project to make with my family! I love how we each came up with something different using the same basic supplies.
I also love that everyone can come up with their own design. It’s such a fun project to do with family or friends, especially during the fall season.
Thanks so much for stopping by, and I hope you have fun decorating your own cakes!
