This fun Broken Glass Jello Recipe is a culinary masterpiece that combines flavors, colors, and textures to create a whimsical and charming treat. The condensed milk concoction intertwines with the jello fragments, forming a mesmerizing stained-glass mosaic.
This jello recipe elevates jello into a pretty and tasty dessert. Add a bit of whip cream to the top and even some fresh fruit or lemon curd, and you have a rich and creamy treat.
Jello holds a special place in my heart as well. It’s like a familiar friend that would always show up at our family gatherings and holiday feasts. I can’t help but smile when I think back to those wonderful moments, surrounded by loved ones and a variety of jello dishes, adding that extra joy to the occasion.
Yankee Candle’s Iced Berry Lemonade collection sparked some culinary inspiration.
The beautiful stained glass design on their candle inspired me to whip up a dessert that captures the essence of Yankee Candle’s captivating Iced Berry Lemonade. I got busy in the kitchen and tried to match its stained glass style using a broken glass jello technique. And well, the rest was history.
I love how it’s a blank canvas that begs for your favorite shades of jello. And because of this, I can already picture this fantastic jello dish showing up at most holiday feasts.
Broken Glass Jello Recipe with Sweetened Condensed Milk
This recipe is like those grocery stores’ jello molds, but instead of using clear jello in between the chunks of jello, this recipe uses sweetened condensed milk, which gives it a white color. And I guess some grocery stores carry this style of dessert in their refrigerated section, but I’ve never bought one.
What’s truly remarkable about this recipe is its delightful balance of visual appeal and delicious taste. It is an excellent combination, rolled up in beautiful single servings. I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty the sweetened condensed milk tasted!
Ok, let’s get this jello recipe started!
How to Make Broken Glass Jello
Step 1 – Gather Ingredients
You’ll need several colorful gelatin packets (in different flavors of your choice), unflavored gelatin, sweetened condensed milk, boiling water, and cold water.
Step 2 – Make Jello
Prepare the first layer: Dissolve one packet of colorful gelatin (flavor of your choice) in 1 cup of boiling water. Stir well until the gelatin is completely dissolved.
Pour into a pan: Pour the mixture into a rectangular pan and let it cool. I made my jello about 1 1/2 inches thick, but you can make them whatever thickness you prefer. Place the pan in the refrigerator to allow the gelatin to set. It usually takes around 20 minutes to an hour.
Prepare subsequent layers: Repeat step 2 for each additional flavor of gelatin.
Step 3 – Make the Sweetened Condensed Milk Mixture
Once the layers are all set, make the sweetened condensed milk mixture. First, mix together the unflavored gelatin with 2 cups of boiling water. Then, stir in the sweetened condensed milk until well combined.
Step 4 – Create The Broken Glass Effect
With all your jello ready, it’s time to create the broken glass effect. Cut out shapes in your layers of jello. Carefully place the cut jello in your glass. And if you can get the layers of jello to stick to the glass, that makes for a dramatic design.
Once your jello is almost to the top of your glass, pour the condensed milk mixture over the broken glass gelatin layers, ensuring it fills the cracks and crevices.
Step 5 – Chill and Set
Return the glasses to the refrigerator and let the dessert chill for 1-2 hours or until the condensed milk layer is set.
Step 5 – Serve
You can top it with a dollop of whip cream, fresh fruit, or some lemon curd.

Jello Tips
How to Store Your Jello
To store your jello, cover the glasses with plastic wrap. Place it in the refrigerator to keep it chilled and maintain its firm texture.
How to Prep Your Jello
I made a lot of jello since the pieces fell apart. Also, it takes a lot of jello to fill a glass. I placed them in every container I could find, and the jello set up just fine.
I did grease the containers to see if that would make it easier to remove them. But I found the oil didn’t make a difference. It’s a bit difficult to get the jello out of the containers. So expect some breakage.
I’ll have to try lining my pan with parchment paper and lifting the whole thing out of the pan. But then again, the jello may stick to the paper. 🙂
Jello Variations
- Tropical Paradise: Use pineapple, mango, and coconut-flavored gelatin layers, and top it off with a condensed milk mixture infused with a hint of lime zest for a refreshing tropical twist.
- Berry Blast: Layer strawberry, raspberry, and blueberry-flavored gelatin to create a vibrant and fruity explosion, complemented by a creamy condensed milk mixture for a delightful balance of flavors.
- Citrus Delight: Opt for layers of orange, lemon, and lime-flavored gelatin, and accentuate the zesty citrus notes with a touch of lemon juice in the condensed milk layer for a bright and tangy treat.
- Chocolate Dream: Experiment with layers of chocolate and vanilla-flavored gelatin, then add a decadent twist with a condensed milk mixture enriched with melted chocolate, creating a luscious dessert.
- Lemon Cream Delight: Alternate layers of lemon-flavored gelatin and creamy vanilla-flavored gelatin to create a delightful contrast. Top it off with a condensed milk mixture infused with a hint of lemon zest for an extra burst of citrus goodness, beautifully complemented by the smooth and creamy texture of the cream layer.
How to Layer The Jello
- Place your colored jello along the inside of the glass. Make sure to alternate the colors if you like that look.
- While preparing the broken glass jello, you may notice that some smaller pieces might break away. To maintain a clear contrast between the jello pieces and the white condensed milk layer, make sure to carefully wipe away these small fragments, ensuring a distinct separation between the stained glass and white jello. This attention to detail ensures that each component stands out beautifully against its background.
- Position your less pristine jello pieces towards the center of the dish. Although they might not be visible, they provide support to the jello attached to the glass.
