This Spicy Edamame Recipe packs a punch with a hint of sweetness from the sweet hot chili sauce. This sauce makes these high-protein snacks a family favorite. We often order them when dining out, which inspired me to recreate them at home. My version was so delicious that my husband and daughter couldn’t resist cleaning the bowl!

A brown bowl filled with seasoned edamame sits on a table surrounded by a teacup, a small sauce dish, and a printed napkin. The background is softly blurred, emphasizing the edamame and suggesting a casual dining setup.

This easy recipe tastes like it’s straight from a high-end restaurant. I’m sure you’ll love these sweet and spicy appetizers!

When preparing edamame, I usually boil, strain, and add salt. However, I’ve recently noticed that restaurants are getting creative with their edamame preparations. While in Hawaii, we ordered some from an Asian food truck, and I was so inspired by their version that I couldn’t wait to make them once we returned home.

Today’s spicy edamame recipe is inspired by the delicious edamame we ate in Hawaii. I must say, my version might just be better than what we had from the food truck!

A stainless steel colander is filled with fresh, green edamame pods. The colander features circular holes and handles on each side, and it is placed on a white countertop. A green and white checkered cloth is partially visible next to the colander.

What is Edamame

Edamame began to gain popularity in the United States in the late 20th century, particularly in the 1990s. Its rise in popularity can be attributed to the increasing interest in healthy foods and the growing influence of Asian cuisine. The trend was bolstered by the expansion of Japanese restaurants and sushi bars, which often featured edamame as a popular appetizer. The health benefits of edamame, a good source of protein and fiber, also contributed to its widespread acceptance and popularity among health-conscious consumers.

How to Prepare Edamame

Use Fresh or Frozen Edamame: Fresh edamame is great, but frozen edamame works just as well if unavailable. Ensure the edamame is still in the pods for the best flavor.

Boil with Salt: Bring a pot of water to a boil and add a generous amount of salt (about 1-2 tablespoons per quart of water). Boil the edamame for 3-5 minutes until they are tender but still slightly firm.

Shock in Ice Water: Immediately transfer the edamame to a bowl of ice water after boiling. This stops the cooking process and helps maintain their bright green color and firm texture.

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • Edamame: Fresh or frozen edamame is the star of this dish, providing a nutritious and tasty base.
  • Toasted Sesame Oil: Adds a rich, nutty flavor that enhances the overall taste of the edamame.
  • Salt: Essential for seasoning, it brings out the natural flavors of the edamame.
  • Garlic: Adds a fragrant and savory depth to the dish.
  • Sweet Chili Sauce: Provides a perfect balance of sweetness and heat, making the edamame irresistibly flavorful.

Spicy Edamame Directions

Step 1 – Boil Edamame Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add a generous amount of salt. Add the edamame and cook for 3-5 minutes until they are tender but still slightly firm. Drain the edamame and immediately transfer them to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. Once cooled, drain again and set aside.

Step 2 – Prepare Garlic Finely mince the garlic cloves. Heat a teaspoon of toasted sesame oil in a small pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant and lightly golden. Be careful not to burn the garlic.

Step 3 – Combine Ingredients: Add the cooked edamame in a large mixing bowl. Pour the sautéed garlic and sesame oil over the edamame. Drizzle with sweet chili sauce, adjusting the amount to your taste preference. Start with a few tablespoons and add more if you prefer a stronger flavor.

Step 4 – Season and Serve Toss the edamame thoroughly to ensure they are evenly coated with the garlic, sesame oil, and sweet chili sauce. Taste and add a pinch of salt if needed. Serve the spicy sweet edamame warm or at room temperature as a delightful appetizer or snack.
