When preparing edamame, I usually boil, strain, and add salt. However, I’ve recently noticed that restaurants are getting creative with their edamame preparations. While in Hawaii, we ordered some from an Asian food truck, and I was so inspired by their version that I couldn’t wait to make them once we returned home.
Today’s spicy edamame recipe is inspired by the delicious edamame we ate in Hawaii. I must say, my version might just be better than what we had from the food truck!
What is Edamame
Edamame began to gain popularity in the United States in the late 20th century, particularly in the 1990s. Its rise in popularity can be attributed to the increasing interest in healthy foods and the growing influence of Asian cuisine. The trend was bolstered by the expansion of Japanese restaurants and sushi bars, which often featured edamame as a popular appetizer. The health benefits of edamame, a good source of protein and fiber, also contributed to its widespread acceptance and popularity among health-conscious consumers.
How to Prepare Edamame
Use Fresh or Frozen Edamame: Fresh edamame is great, but frozen edamame works just as well if unavailable. Ensure the edamame is still in the pods for the best flavor.
Boil with Salt: Bring a pot of water to a boil and add a generous amount of salt (about 1-2 tablespoons per quart of water). Boil the edamame for 3-5 minutes until they are tender but still slightly firm.
Shock in Ice Water: Immediately transfer the edamame to a bowl of ice water after boiling. This stops the cooking process and helps maintain their bright green color and firm texture.
