Downton Abbey

downton abbey is all over gorgeous
there is a funny little fact about me that you may not know, i’m an anglophile!  my husband is quite entertained by this notion, since i’m a third generation japanese american who would love to live in a house decorated like a jane austin movie!  so, of course, we are watching downton abbey. since we no longer get cable tv, we are streaming it off amazon and so we are season behind everyone. so my apologies if i’m a little behind on my seasons! i must admit we also had a difficult time warming up to this wonderful series, but now we are hooked like the other 10 million viewers! the story, character development and production quality are superb. of course i’m watching all the interior shots and drooling over the costumes.
i’ve noticed that there are quite a few marketing lines surrounding the series. the paint company, kelly moore has come out with paint suggestions so that the public can recreate some of the downton abbey rooms.  my home doesn’t have the same feel, but i do enjoy all the beautiful set decor.and i can glean some basic decorating elements from the show.  so, if you haven’t already started watching the series, you’ll have to start this winter when the days are shorter and the nights are longer. grab a cup of tea and enjoy being immersed into this amazing pbs show that has a look that will mesmerize your eyes and design sensibilities!

the amazing cast of actors.  it is quite impressive that the script juggles all these character’s story lines and some how makes it all a cohesive plot.

the  highclere castle in hampshire is used for the exterior shots and most the interior scenes. i may have to plan a trip in the future to this lovely castle!

don’t you just want a room with all these beautiful linen colors?  oh my… the green, cream, grey, black and tan are just beautiful together! i’m a big fan of these lighter colors.  supposedly the women wore certain colors for the various times of the day… creams and whites for morning, slightly darker hues in the afternoon, and then in the evening they wore jewel colors as wells as more jewelry.

dame maggie smith is perfect in this series and i really believe she has all the best lines.  her character’s observations are spot on and always has my husband and i chuckling! on the interior design note, i love the silver tea set and oh the tea cups.  hmm, i may need to bring out my tea cups from the back of my cabinets!

this room is so bright and rich with gold.  the green makes it alive like a garden and to me the gold makes it feel like sunshine.  it has a energy that is so positive and light. a couple of ways you can get this look is to decorate with gold painted items.  this photo shows a tremendous amount of it in the room and i love how it plays so nicely off the green. also, walls of portraits or paintings could be brought into our homes. this layering look gives a room nice dimension.

i just love the kitchen with it’s rich wall color, copper pots and gorgeous wood surfaces.  i would love to have a kitchen like this.  i think what i like most about this room is the earthiness of the surfaces. it is a inviting space and welcomes people to create yummy dishes! i love the rich paint color on the walls, it has an old world look. supposedly, the creators used pretty authentic colors from the time period. this room is not filmed in the highclere castle but rather from a set that is recreated at ealing studios.

all the images are so rich with colors and details! i’ve got to create a room that has these beautiful colors, i love how pastel most of them are and then you have alfred in his black suit. so i guess the lesson here is that black works nicely with these colors. but, most definitely i need to buy some copper pots!

tea anyone?  this is just a dreamy room.  lady mary and her possible suitor, lord gillingham have tea in this conservatory. isn’t it a gorgeous room? i guess i need to bring more fresh white flowers into my home!

so if you want to get the look for your home, wedding or a special dinner party, of course there are pinterest boards. i guess we’ll all be wanting to decorate our homes with candlesticks, gold frames, french chairs, copper pots, and beautiful linen!   oh, gosh… i think i have another thing to obsess over!
