Family Room Project

still working on this family room project!

i’m not quite sure how long i’ve been working on this project, but it feels like i’m finally making some progress.  i recently tackled my drapes dilemma. i don’t know about you, but it takes me a while to research and decide on almost all my decor in our home.  i’m the queen of returns!  so the other day, i was shopping at ikea and happened to spy a great deal!  they had the merete (canvas) drapes on sale for $19.00 (for two panels) compared to the normal $27.99.  this is a fantastic price for drapes and so i had to buy them.  i ended up buying 8 panels which meant i had a ton of them to hem. you see, ikea saves money on only producing one size, and i’m sure this is how they keep their prices so low. i was bound and determined to hem them myself so i could stay on budget. since i don’t have a working sewing machine, i ended up using the iron on sewing tape.  i had never used this tape, so i was a little skeptical. but, i found it worked out nicely.  i only used it to make the initial small hem and then i folded it over and did the final hem by hand.  i’m very happy with the results and i love the nice clean look of these drapes.  prior to tackling this project, we had honeycomb type blinds that came with the house when we bought it four years ago.  our new drapes add a coziness and softness to the room and they dress up the whole space.

the drapery rods and finials are from bed, bath, and beyond.  i matched the silver grommets of the drapes with the silver rods.  i love the classic look with a little touch of modern sleek.

i made these from the ikea shadow box frames and cut out butterflies from the beautiful paper source’s paper.  these frames will be placed around the room on my shelves. it definitely has the feel that i’m after.  i never can find the right picture for my decor, so this time i decided to make my own. it turned out to be a fun and easy project.  btw, to make the butterfly 3 dimensional, i just used a little crafting foam that i placed to the back of the butterfly and scrapbooking paper. i ended up curling the wings to make it appear real.

we had this print on our living room mantle and decided to move it into the family room since it feels perfect for the space! my talented brother took this photograph of the yellow umbrellas that the artist, christo placed at tejon ranch in california.
this is the indoor/outdoor carpet i recently ordered from layla grayce.  a while back, i won a design contest on their site and so i finally used my gift certificate to buy this amazing rug. the color works perfectly with my tan walls.  i was contemplating the light blue version but ultimately, i wanted a lighter look in this room. also, one of the reasons i went with this beige/gray color is that it would be seen from the living room and kitchen and blue would’ve clashed visually.  i had the darnedest time making a final decision and i obsessed a ton over the various colors available. but when it finally arrived and i put it in the room, i immediately fell in love with it. it transposed the room dramatically and in a good way! i’m bringing color in through the other decor like pillows and pictures.  it will be nice to have the option to change out the colors since the foundation is so neutral.
my furry friend, gibbs is enjoying my new rug.  he totally is a nice accent to my room!
