Easy Way to Store French Bread

french bread, yum…
an easy way to store it!
recently, when we were vacationing in france we went to a farmer’s market in the small provencial town of coustellet.  we of course had to buy a loaf of bread, which turned out to be $9.40 us dollars!  oh well, i’m sure we bought a lot of things that if we knew how much it was in dollars we would have been shocked.  anyway, the woman who sold us the bread tried to instruct us on how to store the bread.  she wanted us to wrap it up in a dishtowel, but of course she couldn’t think of the english word and my husband couldn’t think of the french word.  the closest word he could remember, was shirt!!!  oh well, we got the idea and we all had a great laugh.  we had many moments like this, like when my husband asked the waiter for the bill and instead asked for a poster!  the waiter in very perfect english said, “WHAT”! oh gosh, too funny.  despite the language barrier we had a grand time! oh yes, a loaf of bread when wrapped in a dishtowel will last for about 3-4 days.  it is amazing, the outer layer stays crispy and the instead stays soft, just like the day you purchased it.  i was totally surprised since i always stored it in a plastic bag so that it wouldn’t dry out, but then it always got soggy!  who would’ve known this little secret, maybe i’m the last to discover this trick.  oh btw, a small baguette gets dried out…yup i tried it… thanks for stopping by! happy autumn…
ok, here is another photo from our trip.  love the french linen hanging in the window! gosh, after returning home i found that you can buy them on amazon, french dish towels ….these towels on amazon are pretty cute, i just might have to add them to my collection!

Thank you for reminding me that a dish towel is the best way to keep fresh bread for a couple of days. My mother told me that years ago but I had forgotten. Guess I’m getting old.
