Tips for Making a Cookie Bowl
- You’ll Need Sturdy Cookie Dough: A soft or runny dough will not hold its shape when baked, resulting in flat or misshapen bowls. Make sure your dough is firm enough to hold its shape but not so stiff that it’s challenging to work with.
- Use a Muffin Tin: A muffin tin is the perfect tool to create chocolate chip cookie bowls. Simply turn the muffin tin upside down and press the cookie dough onto the outside of the muffin cups.
- Line the Muffin Tin: Cover the muffin tin with tin foil to ensure that the cookie bowls come out easily.
- Make sure the dough at the top of the muffin tin is flat so that when done, the cookie bowl will not wobble when sitting on a surface.
- Cool the Cookie Bowls: Once the cookie bowls are baked, cool them in the muffin tin for a few minutes before carefully removing them. This will help them hold their shape.

How to Make Cookie Ice Cream Bowls
Step 1 – Make the Cookie Dough
Combine and mix flour and salt in a bowl. Place the egg in a small bowl and whisk with a fork thoroughly.
Whip shortening for a minute or two with a mixer. Add vanilla to the shortening and mix well.
Add brown and granulated sugar to the shortening and mix for another minute or two until combined.
Next, add the egg mixture to the shortening and blend well.
Add portions of the flour to the sugar/shortening mixture and beat well after each addition.
Once all the flour is added, beat for a minute.
Step 2 – Prep Muffin Tins
Turn the muffin tin upside down and place tin foil over the tin. Cover the whole muffin cup and make sure the tin foil sticks closely to the tin.
Step 3 – Mold Dough
Mold the cookie dough over the tin foiled-lined muffin tin. Evenly distribute the dough over the tin. Make sure the dough is flat on top, so the cooked cookie bowl sits flat on the surface.
Step 4 – Bake
Bake the cookie bowl at 375 for 16 minutes. When cooked, remove from oven and let sit on cookie racks. Allow the bowls to cool thoroughly before removing them from the tin. Next, remove the foil from the cookie. Fill bowls with ice cream, pudding, or whatever you prefer.
Once you add the ice cream, the cookie begins to get soggy. So make sure to eat it before your ice cream melts!
Reasons Why This Cookie Recipe is Different
- To make a cookie bowl, you need added structure to the dough. So, there is extra flour in this recipe.
- There is no baking powder or Baking soda, so the cookie won’t spread too much.
- Since there is a bit more flour, there is a little extra shortening in this recipe.
- Instead of using regular-size chocolate chips, this recipe uses mini ones. The smaller chips allow the sculpting of the dough over the tin.
- Crisco is less likely to puff up and spread compared to using butter.

Hiya! Love this idea! Any thoughts on the potential to make this without eggs?
I’m trying to build up a supply of egg free desserts for a friend’s daughter, and this would make an amazing base for so many things!

Hi Kelsey,
That’s so wonderful that you’re making egg-free desserts. So, you could use an egg alternative if you like. I’ve also used sparkling (seltzer) water instead of an egg. So use 1/4 cup of sparkling water for one egg. I used it on a cookie recipe and couldn’t tell the difference!

How many does this recipe make?

Hi Holly,
This recipe makes five cookie bowls, but you can add the number to the recipe app. It will augment the ingredients to your desired amount. I hope this helps. Thanks!
