Tuesday Tip

Happy New Year! I have been busy working on our new blog schedule for 2016. I recently decided to have a post every Tuesday. The topic I have chosen is a funny one. I’m going to share with you helpful little tips that I have stumbled upon, some I’ve learned from friends and family and others that I discovered on my own. If you know me, I’m somewhat fascinated with small details. And if these little things can make my life easier and happier, that means a lot to me. So, I want to share small tips with you every Tuesday, and I hope you like and find value in these fun posts.

~ A Note about the Nester ~
My husband and I have a friend, who every time her family cooked a turkey they always cut off one end of the turkey. They did this religiously every Thanksgiving holiday. Finally, one of the family members asked their mom,
why are we cutting off the end of the turkey.
Well, it was because grandma had a small oven and the turkey didn’t fit.
I feel that we need to think outside our normal routines to solve problems.

S’well Bottles

This Christmas I bought my kids a few of the snazzy, S’well bottles. Our daughter has an obsession with drinking water and water bottles. Don’t you think that water and water bottles are pretty trendy these days? I do have a few requirements about our family water bottles collection. They need to be either stainless steel or glass, you see I’m a little scared about all the plastic we have in our lives. So I try to steer clear of plastic drinking bottles and luckily our kids love these S’well bottles, and it appears to keep drinks really cold and hot. The added benefit is that this line of containers is beautiful, stainless steel, and double walled so not cold or hot to touch. So, I’m sure you are wondering where I’m going with this, but here is my ah-ha moment. I’m sure you all have dealt with this small problem, how do you get an ice cube into these water bottles! So, every morning while I’m making the children’s lunches, I only put water in their lunch bottles. I leave out the ice cubes since I don’t enjoy forcing them into the small openings. I even went as far as buying a little ice cube tray that molds the ice into a tube shape that fits into the bottles. But of course, this tray didn’t last. I failed to use these special trays, and I found it annoying that I had yet another thing to maintain.

Well, it finally dawned on me that if I only fill the standard ice cube tray halfway, the ice cubes will totally slide in through the opening! I’m almost a little embarrassed to admit that I didn’t figure this out early. It is one of those problems that made me think outside the box.

I had a tough time photographing the ice tray so you could view the half full tray. I hope you can visualize what I’m talking about.
I did a little research about these great bottles. They have double insulation and the stainless steel is non-leaching. The other cool thing is that since it has two layers, the outside does create a surface of condensation. That means it is not going to sweat water in your bag, backpack, etc.. On a higher note, I also love that the company is committed to giving 10% back to charities who are providing clean water to parts of the world that have drinking water problems. In addition, to all the above info, I love the fact that they are trying to decrease the amount of plastic bottles in our world! Hooray!

Maybe some of you have figured this out already? Maybe there is some daily common problem you have figured out and would like to share?  It would be so nice if you would send me an email or a write a comment below if you have a moment and maybe we can share your little tips too.

By the way, I ran a little test and found that the S’well bottles kept the water cold for 24 hours! And, since it is double walled construction the bottle doesn’t sweat or leave a puddle of water in your backpack or purse. When placing hot drinks in it, the outside of the container is not hot to touch. I found it lives up to all it’s claims.

Cheers,
