A well-organized pantry streamlines meal prep, reduces food waste and brings order to your daily routine.

I’ve reorganized our kitchen pantry before, but I wasn’t too concerned about using plastic containers at the time. With a growing awareness of the impact of plastic in our daily lives, I decided it was time for a change. I cleared out the old plastic and swapped them for durable, food-safe glass containers—making both a functional and mindful upgrade. Out with the old, in with the fresh and sustainable!

Today, I finally mustered up the energy to take on this project and bring you this post on organizing a small pantry! So let’s take a look at how to organize a small pantry!

A small pantry boasts a neatly organized shelf adorned with glass jars filled with dry foods like pasta, popcorn, and oats. Each jar, crowned with a wooden lid and marked by a white label, lines up in perfect rows, maximizing space while maintaining an aesthetic allure.

Maximizing Storage with Smart Adjustments

A small pantry can quickly feel cluttered, but with a few strategic changes, you can create a space that works efficiently for your needs. You’ll make the most of every inch by customizing shelves, utilizing vertical storage, and choosing the right containers.

Customizing Shelves for Better Use of Space

Many pantries have fixed shelves that don’t accommodate varying food sizes, leading to wasted space. Adjusting or adding shelves allows you to store items efficiently. I always adjust my shelves to ensure that each shelf has the right amount of headspace above the containers but not a huge amount that is wasted.

Adjustable Shelving to Fit Different-Sized Items

Installing adjustable shelves or adding extra shelving inserts lets you create customized sections for tall bottles, bulk containers, and small jars. To utilize the space beneath each shelf, consider using under-shelf baskets.

Utilizing Vertical Storage for Maximum Efficiency

If your pantry has high ceilings, use that space! Stackable bins, risers, and hanging organizers make storing frequently used items at eye level easy while keeping less-used items higher up.

Choosing the Right Containers for Better Organization

Switching from bulky packaging to uniform storage containers creates a streamlined look while keeping food fresher. Glass-sealable containers are ideal for dry goods, preventing pests and maintaining freshness longer than the original packaging.

Why Glass-Sealable Containers Keep Food Fresher

Glass containers are airtight, preventing moisture and air from affecting pantry staples like flour, sugar, and grains. Unlike plastic, glass doesn’t absorb odors or stains, keeping food tasting fresh. Opt for stackable designs to maximize shelf space.

Stackable and Space-Saving Solutions

Using square or rectangular containers instead of round ones allows for better stacking and storage. I tried my best to find some square or rectangular glass containers that rated well in reviews, but alas, I came up empty-handed and bought the round containers. I decided to buy some oversized ones for some bulky baking items, so no stacking is needed. Choose clear glass or labeled containers to quickly see what’s inside, reducing the chance of duplicate purchases or expired items.

Four glass jars with silver lids sit neatly organized on a shelf, each labeled—"OATS," "RICE," and two marked "CEREAL." Perfect for organizing a small pantry, the clear glass design keeps contents visible for easy access.

Labeling Techniques for an Easy-to-Maintain System

A labeling system helps everyone in your household find and return items to their designated spots, keeping your pantry organized long-term.

Creating Professional-Looking Labels at Home

Homemade labels don’t have to look messy. A laser labeling printer creates crisp, clean labels that are easy to read and add a stylish touch to your pantry.

Using a Laser Label Printer for a Clean Look

Laser printers create waterproof, smudge-resistant labels, making them an excellent choice for pantry organization. With customizable fonts and designs, you can tailor them to match your kitchen aesthetic. I use a compact Nimbot label maker, which prints durable laser labels without the need for ink cartridges—a huge plus! Just download the app, sync it with your phone, and easily print labels with this handy little machine.

Categorizing Labels for Quick Identification

Grouping pantry items into categories—baking, grains, snacks, and canned goods—makes it easier to find things quickly. Labeling shelves and containers help maintain order, even when multiple people use the pantry.

Additional Tips for a Clutter-Free Pantry

A well-organized pantry isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about functionality. These minor adjustments can make a big difference in keeping your pantry clutter-free.

Grouping Similar Items for Easy Access

Store items together, such as baking supplies, in one bin and snacks in another. This system makes grocery shopping more manageable because you can quickly see what needs restocking.

Rotating Stock to Reduce Waste

Incorporating Baskets and Dividers for Small Items

Small packets of seasoning, tea bags, and snack bars can easily create clutter. Use drawer dividers or baskets to group them. Lazy Susans are great for corner shelves, keeping jars and bottles within easy reach.

Glass Containers for Food Storage

You might be wondering why I’m swapping out all my containers for glass. With plastic becoming more prevalent in our daily lives, I wanted to make a conscious change in how I store food. Thanks to the convenience of online shopping, I didn’t have to drive from store to store—I found the perfect sealable glass containers right from my computer.

Plus, we’ve had our fair share of little pests sneaking into plastic containers, so I was happy to make the switch!

A vintage label maker rests on a white surface, printing "FLOUR" as a glass jar labeled "CEREAL" stands behind it. This scene perfectly captures the essence of organizing a small pantry, enhancing both style and efficiency in your kitchen space.

A Label Machine is The Only Way to Go!

At the start of my organizing project, I ordered labels online, thinking it would be an easy solution. However, I quickly realized that finding the right size and style for my jars was challenging. To top it off, one of the labels I received was for MSG—who keeps a giant supply of MSG? Not me! That’s when I turned to my trusty (and adorable) Nimbot label maker. I grabbed a pack of large labels, popped them into the machine, and used their app to create custom labels that fit perfectly. It’s that simple!

Once I made the first label, I knew this process was the best solution for this small pantry organizing project!
