Hey there! It’s summertime, so come on and cool down with this collection of homemade, refreshing Ice Cream Recipes. Ah, summer. It is the time of year when the days are longer, the sun shines brighter, and everything seems slightly more relaxed. For me, summer and ice cream go together like fireworks and the 4th of July. Something about relaxing and enjoying a cold, sweet treat on a hot day sounds good to me now.
I have always loved ice cream, but my appreciation for it has deepened over the years, especially during this time of year. I still find that same joy in ice cream, albeit with a more sophisticated palate and a nifty gadget: my Ninja Creami machine.
Saturday Chitchat with Janine – Volume 172
Discovering the Ninja Creami
This little machine has revolutionized my ice cream game. When I first heard about it, I was intrigued but skeptical. Could it make homemade ice cream that rivals my favorite store-bought brands? I quickly found out the answer was a resounding yes. The Ninja Creami isn’t just a machine; it’s a gateway to endless possibilities, more like recipes!
One of the most significant advantages has been its impact on my husband, who is lactose intolerant. But with the Ninja Creami, we’ve been able to whip up lactose-free and dairy-free versions that taste just as good, if not better, than their traditional counterparts.
The Joy of Homemade Creations
What I love most about making ice cream at home is enjoying one of my creations with known ingredients. The Ninja Creami makes it so easy to experiment with different ingredients and textures. I’ve discovered that fresh summer fruits make some of the most delicious ice creams – ripe strawberries, juicy mangos, and tangy lemons. There’s something incredibly satisfying about knowing exactly what’s in your ice cream and being able to customize it to your tastes.
And let’s not forget the fun factor. There’s a particular joy in the process–measuring ingredients, blending them together, and watching as the machine transforms them into a silky-smooth treat. It’s an activity that brings a little wonder back into the kitchen, making it feel less like a chore and more like a delightful experiment. Now, not all of these recipes were created via this machine BUT nonetheless, these recipes are just as simple and sweet!
A Sweet Conclusion
Ultimately, ice cream and summer are the perfect pair because they embody the essence of simple pleasures. Summer invites us to slow down, savor the moment, and enjoy life’s little delights – and what could be more delightful than a scoop of homemade ice cream? Whether it’s a classic cone enjoyed on the porch or a bowl of something exotic and new, ice cream makes summer days a little sweeter.
A Personal Note from Janine
We just returned from a spontaneous trip to Hawaii. Our lives are incredibly chaotic right now, and I knew if we didn’t take a trip soon, summer would slip away without any getaway.
This was our first trip to Hawaii without the kids. My husband had vowed during our last visit that we’d return without teenagers, and he kept his promise!
In Kauai, our days were blissfully simple: leisurely breakfasts, hiking to our favorite beach, enjoying lunch, indulging in a sweet treat, and savoring dinner from a local food truck. My favorite culinary delight was Hawaiian Shave Ice! If you’ve never tried this frosty, sweet dessert, you’re truly missing out. We were thrilled to find a place that offered dairy-free coconut sorbet, which we enjoyed in the middle of a sea of syrupy shaved ice.
Now, I’m determined to recreate that coconut sorbet at home, and luckily, I have my Ninja Creami machine to help me make this delicious cold treat!
I hope you had a lovely Fourth of July and are enjoying this summery Saturday!
Thanks for joining me today!

This Week’s Tip – Podcasts
Podcasts
We always listen to podcasts during car trips to pass the time. Recently, I discovered that Julia Louis-Dreyfus has a podcast featuring Ina Garten. I downloaded it from Spotify and enjoyed Julia’s delightful interview while traveling home from Hawaii.
If you have Spotify and need interesting podcasts for your upcoming summer trips, check out their lineup! It’s a fantastic way to stay entertained, especially on a plane without the internet.
Latest Obsession – Shave Ice
As I mentioned, we enjoyed having shaved ice during our vacation in Hawaii. There’s nothing quite as refreshing as a bowl of cold, sweet, finely shaved ice on a warm summer day.
When we ordered our treat, I observed how the workers prepared this fun, snowball-shaped icy delight. They placed a dollop of coconut sorbet at the bottom of the bowl and then began adding the shaved ice. After accumulating a good amount of ice, they packed it down into a ball, added more ice, and packed it down again. Once they had the perfectly formed ice ball, they topped it with tasty tropical syrups.
Speaking of syrups, you can use fruit juices instead if you don’t like the premade Hawaiian ones.
If you don’t have a shave ice machine yet, here’s the link to the one I bought and the syrups link if you’re interested. They might not be exactly like the ones in Hawaii, but they’re still delicious.
My husband’s only complaint about this tropical treat was why they left the letter “d” off the word “shave.” Being an English major, I had to endure a lecture every time we bought one! Of course, we always had a good laugh over this grammatical quirk!
