How to Hang Your Chair From a Ceiling
Materials Needed:
- Hanging Chair
- Sturdy Rope (included with the chair)
- Heavy-Duty Ceiling Hook (rated for the weight of the chair and user)
- Stud Finder
- Drill with Drill Bit
- Vice Grips or Pliers (I recommend strong vice grips)
- Carabiner or S-hook (optional, for easy attachment)
Instructions:
Finding a Stud in the Ceiling:
- Locate the Area:
- Determine where to hang the chair and ensure enough clearance for swinging.
- Use a Stud Finder:
- Turn on the stud finder and place it flat against the ceiling.
- Slowly move it along the ceiling until it indicates the presence of a stud.
- Find the left and right sides of the stud and mark each side with a pencil.
- NOTE: Ceiling joists are typically spaced 16 to 24 inches apart.
Attaching the Hook:
- Drill a Pilot Hole:
- Drill a hole in the center of the joist (between your two pencil marks) using a drill bit that is about half the diameter of the threaded end of your ceiling hook.
- Install the Ceiling Hook:
- Screw the heavy-duty ceiling hook into the pilot hole using your hands to get it started, then tighten it securely with vice grips or pliers. Make sure it is fully threaded into the stud for maximum support.
- Attach the Rope:
- Loop the sturdy rope over the ceiling hook.
- You can also use a carabiner or S-hook to attach and detach the chair from the rope easily.
- Secure the Chair:
- Tie the other end of the rope to the hanging chair, ensuring it is securely fastened.
- Adjust the Height:
- Adjust the rope length so the chair hangs comfortably, typically 1-2 feet off the ground or floor.
- Test the Setup:
- Carefully sit in the chair to test its stability and make any necessary adjustments.
Tips:
- Weight Capacity: Ensure that the ceiling hook is rated to support the combined weight of the chair and user.
- Regular Inspection: Periodically check the hook, rope, and chair for any signs of wear or damage and replace parts as needed to maintain safety.
Following these steps, you can securely hang your Serena and Lily outdoor rattan hanging chair from a ceiling stud, providing a safe and enjoyable experience.
Once again, we absolutely love our outdoor chair, and I hope you get the chance to own one, too! While it is a bit pricey, I truly believe it’s a worthwhile investment if you want to add beauty to your backyard!
