Bissell Carpet Cleaner
This Memorial Day weekend, spring cleaning is happening at our home and the Bissell carpet cleaner showed off its magic. I have a bright white living room and we all know that white will get dirty. I bought our shaggy rug back in December and so now it needs a thorough rug cleaning. The label states that it should be washed by a professional but I choose to do the cleaning myself. I’m in full spring cleaning mode so it made sense to participate in my own little comparison between two major rug cleaners, Bissell Big Green Machine and the Rug Doctor. Join me and find out my results and make sure you read to the end of the post for all kinds of great offers.
A Note about the Nester
I love to vacuum and sweep our home. I believe that a quick vacuuming can make any room feel clean instantly.
This is a Bissell sponsored post, the opinions in this post are my own.
In order to use the two types of rug cleaners, I had to rent them from two different stores. Our local Ace Hardware carries the Bissel carpet cleaners and our local grocery store, Safeway carries the Rug Doctor cleaners. If you need to find a Bissel carpet rental this link should help: Bissell Rental Location
The instructions are pretty straightforward and both had them listed right on the machines. I did find it interesting that the customer service employee at Ace gave me the full instructions on how to use the machine and also they also loaded it into my car! Now that is awesome service. At Safeway, I was never given verbal instructions and no one helped me take it out to my car, I wonder if the Rug Doctor company is aware of their customer service component?
While I was sweating and working hard cleaning my carpet these two had the right idea! Hanging out in our pool was the perfect thing to do on this hot spring day.
Here is our rug before the cleaning. Since it is white the stains are pretty visible and there is a pretty significant dark dirt trail around the edges. I must admit we don’t have any pets and food is not allowed in the living room, but this carpet did have dirt stains!
I quickly got down to business and loaded up both machines with the cleaning solution and hot tap water. I used the machines and eventually hooked up the hose/brush attachment that I rented. I loved being able to control the release of the solution exactly where I wanted. Since the shag carpet has long strands, I found that the handheld hose seemed to work best.
The Big Green Machine got the run clean and bright. It was interesting that the manager of our local Ace Hardware said, that his employees love the Big Green machine, and now I can see why.
You can see the stain where the Rug Doctor tried to work its magic. I will have to follow up on cleaning this one section again with the Big Green Machine, but for now, I’m a very tired nester and wanted the job complete.

Hi Janine! Love reading your post about Spring cleaning! I have always wanted a rug cleaner…living in the country means a lot of dirt travels “uninvited” into my home! I love to entertain, too…so carpets need upkeep regularly! I’m also a fellow vacuum-aholic!! (Teehee) it’s a quick boost to my spirits when my carpets look good! Happy Nesting over the rest of your holiday weekend! Lisa

Hi Janine! I love your white shaggy rug. I bought one for Grace’s room and she loves it too. I’m so glad you did a comparison of carpet cleaners and shares your results. It’s always great to get a trustworthy review of these things. I’m a bit behind so my spring cleaning has turned into summer cleaning (but my flowers and veggies are planted). 🙂 My mom is in the process of slowly moving in with us and spending more time at our house. Growing up, we never wore shoes in the house. I tried to implement that rule in my own house but sometimes I’m the biggest culprit. It would be great to clean the carpets and hopefully avoid some of that “Mom Guilt”…maybe we’ll be better about taking our shoes off. 😉

I love white upholstery, but that’s the problem w it, esp in high-traffic areas.
The Big Green did a great job on your pretty rug!

We have two furbabies and four young kids. With summer looming in our future and the traveling between outdoors and the living room, my poor carpet looks nothing like what we got when we purchased our home. I would love to win this to try to get back what i once had. Plus I love that you guys have done the work testing both! I have tried the Rug Doctor personally and was not impressed. I had a friend that told me about the Big Green and what great results she had. Now that I see your post, I know!

I have a home Bissel rug cleaner and they work great but it was a lot of work when we had wall to wall carpet. I should have rented this one instead. I have area rugs now so those are perfect for my little Bissel. But I do have dogs and some white in my rugs, plus we wear shoes in the house = big mistake 🙂 I’ll have to pull my rugs outside and give them a good scrubbing.

Oh, and the job would go much quicker if I had use of one of their rental machines 🙂

You’re so brave for having a solid white carpet with kids! Our area rug in the living room has some white in it, and it seems like I spend half my life telling our son not to eat/drink/walk with shoes on it! At least now I know to rent a Bissell carpet cleaner when it gets dirty!

Bissel makes incredible products! I love that you can rent them .. it’s so convenient! We just moved into this house and the carpets SMELL!! This is something I really need to do and try to get this smell out. Thanks for such a great review on a wonderful brand!

Wow!! I never knew Bissell carpet cleaners were available for rent! We normally clean our carpets every 3 months. Now that I have a toddler in potty training, I need to do this every couple of weeks 😉 I am definitely going to go get this!!
Sam@Raggedy Bits
Super cool! I have tried different carpet cleaner system before and was totally not happy with the outcome! Seeing the results that you got and how easy it seems I will definitely give Bissell (the big Green Machine) Great post and info! 🙂

Hey Janine. Glad to read that the Big Green did such a good job for you, but can’t say that I’m at all surprised. We recently analyzed the experiences that 1672 consumers had with this carpet cleaner and out of all those that mentioned using it on high traffic areas, white carpet or shag carpet, we only found a single person that wasn’t satisfied with the results they achieved. On top of that we found 97.25% of these consumers were satisfied overall with the Big Green. So I wasn’t kidding when I said I wasn’t surprised by what it did for you 🙂

You have such a DREAMY white living room gorgeous! A Bissell customer service mentioned having the Big Green Carpet Cleaner for Shag rugs a moment ago and said they cost $460.00 I wanted to get it but need to use my credit card for my 13 year old fur daughters vet bill. Was curious about it so I googled it and found your blog. I would go over that spot the Rug Dr left behind with the Bissell next time.

Evelyn,
I’m so glad you found my blog! That was such a fun post to do. So happy you found the result helpful! Sorry, you couldn’t buy a carpet cleaner.

This guide is good. However, I want to know about bissell 3624 spotbot professional carpet cleaner. How to do rate that machine when it comes to bissell carpet cleaners?
happyhappynester
Hi Helen,
Unfortunately, I didn’t have the Bissell 3624 Spotbot Professional Carpet Cleaner to review. Good luck with your search!

I have this machine and it is the best. I wanted to know if I could use it on shag and you have helped immensely. Once people at work found out I had one I became the work rental with me always getting a bottle of wine as a thank you. If I win the coupon I will give it to a co worker instead of my machine. Lol happy spring cleaning!

Just to clarify, you used the hose of the green machine to clean the shag rug, correct? The pile on my shag rug is over 1” and I worry it will get stuck in the machine’s brushes when it turns.
happyhappynester
I did use the Green Machine on my shag carpet. Test a section of your carpet and see how it does. Shag carpets are tough to clean, but I always do it myself since the cost of having it professionally cleaned is about the cost of the rug. Sometimes I will place my throw carpet (it’s pretty small) on our stucco wall and hose it down that way. I then set it over some outdoor metal chairs and create a rug tent. This is the best way to dry the water-drenched carpet during the hot summer months.
Phuong Nguyen
Did you use the hose only or also the part with the spinning bristle?
happyhappynester
I’ve cleaned this carpet a few different ways. The Green Machine did a great job, but I do like cleaning it with the hose. I spot clean the stained areas, and then I get the whole carpet wet. But I must warn you that the rug gets REALLY heavy with water! If you live in a warm place, then it will dry in a day or two. The key is to place it on something so that air gets underneath the rug. I put four of my outdoor metal chairs in a square and then cover them with my rug. Btw, I do this all outdoors on my big patio. You don’t want the carpet to dry on an outdoor patio, and it will take forever to dry. I just recently cleaned another low-pile outdoor rug, and it came out like new. You can check out this post on the blog.
