Inspiration for Something New
That being said, fall always inspires me to test out new recipes too. I’ll spot fresh ingredients at the market or see a new idea on Pinterest and think, “That could be perfect for dinner this week.”
Fall feels like the perfect season to get creative with what’s in the kitchen. Whether it’s mixing up a pasta dish with seasonal veggies or finding a lighter, healthier spin on a cozy classic, I always find inspiration this time of year.
A Personal Note from Janine
Fall is here, and I’m so ready for all the cozy vibes—fuzzy socks, warm dinners, and evenings spent at home. It’s the perfect season to slow down and bring a little comfort to the dinner table. I love when the kitchen feels alive with activity and everyone starts drifting in, asking, “What smells so good?”
Back when my kids were little and my husband worked long hours in the city, I still made it a point for us to have dinner together—even if it meant eating a bit later. We’d wait for him to get home on the train, then all sit down at the table and share stories from our day. I don’t know if my kids remember those moments, but to me, they were some of the best.
Lately, I’ve been sharing more of our favorite savory recipes (thanks to a little nudge from my husband!). He’s great in the kitchen and has even contributed a few of his own recipes, like our Instant Pot Garlic Mashed Potatoes. We love teaming up to cook—it makes dinner feel more fun and less like a chore.
If your evenings have been feeling hectic too, perhaps a homemade meal is just what you need to slow everything down. I’m sharing a few comforting dishes this week that we’ve been loving lately, and I hope you find one (or two!) that your family will enjoy as much as ours does.
Cheers,

Latest Obsession – Sourdough Starter
Leaving San Francisco meant saying goodbye to something I didn’t expect to miss so much—freshly baked sourdough from nearly every grocery store. Once we moved, I searched high and low for a loaf that could compare, but nothing quite hit the mark.
That’s when I stumbled upon this amazing sourdough starter online. It arrives ready to go—all you have to do is feed it flour and water, and you’re off and baking. After just two loaves, I can honestly say this starter makes a beautifully tangy, deeply sour bread that’s absolutely delicious. It reminds me of the sourdough I used to grab weekly back in California!
I actually had a starter back home, but I had to say goodbye to it during our cross-country move—it just wouldn’t have survived the trip. Now that I’ve rediscovered sourdough baking, I’m getting curious about the world of starters and regional wild yeasts. Could different starters from around the country create totally different flavors?
Let’s just say… I’m ready to do some delicious experimenting. Stay tuned—more sourdough adventures are definitely coming!
This Week’s Tip – Organizing a Small Kitchen
Knife Organizer for a Small Kitchen
Since moving, we’ve temporarily downsized into a much smaller home—and let me tell you, our kitchen is tiny! With hardly any drawer space and only one exposed side of the fridge, I’ve had to get creative with how I store everything.
One of the best solutions I’ve found? This magnetic knife holder! I popped it onto the side of our fridge, and it has completely changed how I work in the kitchen. Not only does it save space, but my knives are now right within arm’s reach—no rummaging through drawers or clunky knife blocks taking up counter space. Total win.
Little organizing tools like this make such a big difference in a small space. I seriously don’t know how I ever lived without it!
