A Personal Note from Janine

japanese mochi recipe
a hand holding a slice of orange mochi

New Year’s was such a big deal in our family! My mom would go all out, cooking and baking for days to prepare for her famous open house. From morning until night, relatives and friends would pop in to celebrate, laugh, and feast on the incredible spread of Japanese food. It was a beautiful way to welcome the year surrounded by love and delicious traditions.

In Japanese culture, we believe certain foods bring health and good luck for the new year, so they’re a must-have on the table. One of my favorites? Sweet rice dessert, also known as mochi. It’s soft, chewy, and has a little magic of its own. I’ve got a whole collection of mochi recipes, from classic to creative twists, so dive in and find one (or three!) to try.

Here’s to a happy, healthy, and lucky 2025 for all of us! Cheers to keeping traditions alive and making new memories along the way. 🥂✨

Cheers,

This Week’s Inspiration – New Year’s Recipes

A golden-brown roasted chicken, perfect for new year's recipes, is presented on a white platter with fresh rosemary sprigs. A fork rests nearby, while the soft-focus background reveals a butter dish and a small white bowl.

Infused Chicken Recipe

Tender, juicy, and packed with butter and spices, this recipe transforms ordinary chicken into an extraordinary dish!

A bowl of couscous topped with grilled chicken, sliced avocado, sweet potato, and herbs offers a delightful New Year's recipe. In the background, a bowl of mixed greens sits beside lemon and avocado halves on a gray table scattered with herbs.

Grilled Salmon Bowl

This Grilled Salmon Bowl recipe is simply irresistible! The grilled fish is perfectly complemented by the honey-sweetened sauce. Inside the bowl, you’ll find a blend of pine nuts, cranberry couscous, creamy avocado slices, roasted yams, and sweet potatoes.

The fresh microgreens and a drizzle of naturally sweet reduced balsamic vinegar complete the dish perfectly. You’ll definitely want to go back for seconds!

A baked dessert in a white square dish, topped with banana slices and chocolate chips. Perfect for New Year's recipes, it's set on crinkled parchment paper, surrounded by a checked cloth, scattered chocolate chips, eggs, and lit candles on a rustic wooden table.

Iced Coffee with Ice Cream

Iced coffee with Ice Cream is a delightful drink that combines the best of the creamy goodness of ice cream and the rich flavor of coffee. Also, whipping up this iced coffee with ice cream is simple and quick, making it the best little treat for summer days!

Pink mochi balls filled with strawberries are artfully arranged on a wooden board dusted with powdered sugar, making for delightful New Year's recipes. A few whole strawberries rest on a small white plate in the background, and a cut mochi reveals the fresh strawberry within.

Strawberry Mochi Recipe

Here’s my quick and easy Strawberry Mochi Recipe that uses sweet rice flour and fresh strawberries. Pop the mochiko batter in the microwave to make the perfect mochi, and wrap the layer around a strawberry.

Yes, it’s that easy to make. There is no bean mixture or ice cream, making it a simpler recipe!

Close-up of a sushi dish with a crispy rice base, perfect for new year's recipes. It features diced avocado, green onions, black sesame seeds, and a drizzle of sauce over fresh raw fish. The vibrant colors highlight the fresh ingredients.

Crispy Rice Sushi Recipe

My initial encounter with Crispy Rice Sushi was at the renowned Nobu restaurant. This delectable dish features a foundation of crispy rice, layered with diced fresh avocado, ahi poke blend, and a generous drizzle of sweet chili sauce.

The key to this appetizer is the crispy sushi rice fried until it’s crunchy and light golden brown. It adds the perfect contrast to the ahi poke and avocado!

A bowl of beef stew with carrots and potatoes over mashed potatoes graces the wooden table, a perfect dish for New Year's recipes. Beside it are slices of bread, a striped napkin with a fork, garlic, half an onion, and a bowl of grated cheese.

Beef Bourguignon Instant Pot

This Beef Bourguignon cooked in an Instant Pot is the ultimate, savory comfort food. The beef chunks and vegetables become melt-in-your-mouth tender, making it a perfect dish for any occasion!

A bowl of creamy soup with vibrant carrots and broccoli sits next to a loaf of rustic bread, perfect for new year's recipes. A small dish of shredded cheese is positioned beside the bowl on a gray-striped tablecloth, accompanied by a silver spoon resting nearby.

Easy Homemade Broccoli Cheddar Soup

This Easy Homemade Broccoli Cheddar Soup is packed with onions, potatoes, carrots, and broccoli. It’s similar to the famous Panera recipe but better. It’s creamy and thick and has a rich flavor that makes it a great soup.

And it’s a soup that simmers for only 30 minutes!

A plate of sugar cookies topped with light pink frosting sits on a white cake stand, embodying delightful New Year's recipes. More cookies are on a square white plate nearby. A pink-checkered napkin and floral cloth rest beneath a bowl with frosting and a spoon.

Crumbl Sugar Cookie Recipe

Do you love sugar cookies? This is a copycat version of the Crumbl Classic Sugar Cookie recipe. This yummy cookie doesn’t contain vanilla extract but rather almond extract.

It has a fresh and surprising taste, and the pink frosting also has a hint of almond.

A black bowl filled with chicken curry served over white rice, garnished with chopped tomatoes, offers a comforting warmth. Perfect for new year's recipes, it's surrounded by fresh cherry tomatoes, garlic cloves, ginger slices, and a spoon. A yellow flower in a vase adds a touch of elegance in the background.

If you’re craving something deliciously comforting, try this Indian Fish Curry with Coconut Milk recipe. Every bite contains spices mingling with the creamy richness of coconut milk.

Whether you’re a long-time fan of Indian flavors or just starting to explore this vibrant cuisine, you absolutely have to try this curry!

Coconut Bundt Cake Recipe

A Coconut Bundt Cake Recipe is a delicious, sweet treat like the famous Tom Cruise Christmas cake he sends to friends. This cake is moist, buttery, and packed with coconut flavor, often topped with a luscious coconut frosting sprinkled with shredded coconut.

It’s the kind of simple, homemade dessert that’s perfect for any occasion!

A loaf of artisanal bread with cranberries, perfect for new year's recipes, rests on an orange and white checkered cloth. A slice is cut and placed in front. The background features a blurred white cake stand with a cup, creating a cozy kitchen atmosphere.

Sourdough Cranberry Walnut Bread

Have you tried the cranberry walnut bread from Costco? I love this yummy bread, but it’s only available during certain times of the year. So, I decided to create my own version: sourdough cranberry walnut bread! It’s such a close match with the chopped nuts and cranberries that I’m thrilled with the result.

Now, I don’t have to wait until the holidays to enjoy my favorite bread!

A white baking dish filled with uncooked ribs marinated in a dark brown sauce sits ready for your New Year's recipes. The dish rests on a white surface, accompanied by a wooden spoon and cloth napkin, while small bowls with seasonings are visible nearby.

Marinade for Pork Ribs

Here’s the Best Marinade for Pork Ribs BBQ recipe! The miso and brown sugar make such a thick sweet mouth-watering sauce that is like no other BBQ rib sauce you’ve ever had.

They’re so good that you’ll be licking every last bit of sauce off the ribs!

A glass of apple cider on a table, garnished with a cinnamon stick, evokes flavors perfect for New Year's recipes. Surrounding the glass are apples and cinnamon sticks, set against a blurred background featuring a jar of cider and an orange container.

Apple Cider Bourbon Cocktail

Celebrate the fall with this Apple Cider Bourbon Cocktail. It’s a crisp, sweet drink with a little hint of cinnamon.

It’s a simple drink to make, and it’s so refreshing and perfect when you have a lot of fresh cider in your home!
