Saturday Chitchat with Janine – Volume 165
I
I tend to go above and beyond when a recipe asks for lemon zest. I adore the intense lemony taste and firmly believe you can never have too much of it. Here’s a fun quote celebrating the zestiness of lemons!
“Lemons are the secret ingredient that turn ordinary desserts into citrusy delights.”
A Personal Note from Janine
I cherish my lemon curd recipe, which was passed down from my dear friend Christine. She was Mindy’s mom, originally from England. Though she moved to the US as a child, her English accent remained thick. I got to know her when I lived next door to Mindy in Seattle. We bonded over our shared love for movies, plants, and food.
Christine had this incredible lemon curd recipe from an old British cookbook. Mindy shared the recipe with me. If memory serves me right, I’ve been making it for years. There’s nothing quite like its creamy, buttery goodness. I always keep a couple of jars on hand, and whenever I crave something sweet and citrusy, I indulge in a spoonful.
It’s a bittersweet memory since Christine passed away unexpectedly a couple of years ago. While we lost a dear friend, her legacy lives on through her wonderful recipe and the memories we shared.
Cheers,

This Week’s Tip – DIY Disposal Refresh (with Lemons)
How to Clean Your Sink
Got a stinky garbage disposal? Here are some tips to freshen it up!
First off, grab some dish gloves since this is a pretty dirty job. Next, remove the rubber gasket from the disposal. Sprinkle some soft scrub with bleach on the gasket and scrub away all that black gunk. Don’t forget to clean the grime inside the sink drain where the gasket sits.
Once everything’s clean, pop the gasket back in place. Now, grab a fresh lemon, cut it up, and toss it down the garbage disposal. Turn on the water and switch on the disposal to grind up the lemon. Your kitchen and sink will smell delightful.
By the way, those Plink Garbage Disposal Cleaners and Deodorizers didn’t do much for me. For a deep clean, you’ve gotta follow these steps to tackle the grime and banish the smell for good!
Latest Obsession – Gluten-Free Lemon Cake
Gluten-Free Lemon Drizzle Cake
This smooth, gluten-free, free lemon drizzle cake is wheat-free but tastes like it has wheat. It’s similar to a lemon pound cake recipe minus the wheat flour. I made this cake a few weeks ago and planned to freeze it, but we kept nibbling at it. We enjoyed it so much, and now I crave it again! Buying all the different gluten-free flours is time-consuming but worth the effort!
