Saturday Chitchat with Janine – Volume 163
I
My Uncle George shared my mom’s passion for gardening. As kids, his back patio was our playground—a haven with a little fish pond and a path lined with flowers leading to the backyard. When I grew up, he gave my mom a small start of his prized Siberian Iris, which she later passed on to me.
During our move from Seattle to Northern California, amidst the chaos of packing, I made sure to take a small sample of that beautiful bush with me.
Last year, we finally found a new home for the iris in our garden. Today, I spotted four blossoms ready to bloom. I’ll be sure to snap a photo and share it with you next week.
And speaking of gardening, there’s a quote I adore:
“The love of gardening is a seed once sown that never dies.” – Gertrude Jekyll
Happy Gardening to you all!
A Personal Note from Janine
This time of year, my husband and I practically live in our garden.
Every weekend, we go to our local nursery, losing ourselves among the rows of plants. It’s a bit of an obsession for both of us.
Our garden is coming together now, with our plants finally starting to flourish as we’d hoped. We’ve got cascading rosemary draping beautifully over the garden wall we wanted to hide and planted many flower seeds that we’re excited to see grow. I’ll list the ones we picked out below.
Our garden’s color scheme is centered around white, purple, pink, and lime green.
We spend even more time outdoors with our new puppy, Maisy. Let’s hope she doesn’t get too curious and mess with our plants—she’s tiny, so fingers crossed!
Well, happy gardening!
Cheers,

How to Start a Hydrangea Plant

Pruning Endless Summer Hydrangeas
Pruning Endless Summer Hydrangeas is essential for keeping them healthy and looking good. Let’s explore what you need to know when it’s time to prune these gorgeous perennials.
This summer, we changed things up in our yard. Our new outdoor dining room is fabulous, and so today, I’m sharing Small Outdoor Patio Ideas in this post. Here are a few things to consider when decorating your outdoor patio space.
I’ve chalked paint a lot of our furniture—it’s like magic for giving new life to old metal chairs! Seriously, it’s amazing. I shared all the details of my project in this post, so come take a peek!
An Easy Outdoor Summer Table is my favorite kind of table to style. In this post are nine helpful tips on how to create a beautiful outdoor tablescape.Â
For those of you who are unaware, Lady Banks Rose is a vigorous climbing rose. It comes in white and yellow and has a slightly sweet scent. It is a thornless rose that is easy to care for. Prune it to train it to grow up arbors, along a fence, or any stable structure!
Despite being a novice gardener, this climbing rose has thrived along our backyard fence. It’s done so well that we planted seven more bushes in our yard.
So if you’ve been searching for the perfect bush to decorate your backyard with, the hunt is over. This climbing rose is your winner!

This Week’s Tip – Self-Watering Glass Globes
Self-Watering Glass Globes
I recently ordered two self-watering globes for my patio flower planters, and they’ve been a game changer. Seeing how well they work, I just went ahead and bought six more! I’m absolutely hooked on these handy garden gadgets.
I filled them with water, and one needs refilling every 2-3 days, while the other can go a whole week without needing more water. It’s clear that each planter has its own watering needs.
I plan to use the extra globes in my Fiddle Leaf Fig containers and some hanging pots. It’s a relief not to have to set up irrigation for all our patio plants!
They will come in handy when we are vacationing this summer!
Latest Obsession – Raised Garden Container
Raised Garden Container
I’ve been busy with my first raised veggie garden project. I grabbed one of these affordable containers and have been slowly working on it.
Putting it together was a breeze. I lined the container with a weed-proofing liner to prevent water from leaking out the small holes on the sides. Then, I had some rich organic garden soil delivered—about 1 cubic yard—and I’ll transfer it into the container today.
This weekend, we’re off to the nursery to pick up a variety of vegetable starts. I’m eager to get this garden up and running, and I’ll share more updates once I’m done!

What a whirlwind of a week it’s been for us!
We welcomed our new puppy, and navigating life with a furry friend brought its fair share of surprises. Needless to say, our projects took a bit of a backseat. But fear not, this weekend, we’re diving back into the swing of things with some garden work.
I’m itching to kickstart my vegetable garden, while my husband has his sights set on building a pergola for our pool equipment.
And of course, in between all the DIY, we’ll be showering our puppy with love and attention.
Wishing you a happy time in the garden and a fantastic Saturday!
